I started taking photos in the estuaries and ports of Oakland, California, inspired by the challenge of shooting outside of traditional wildlife habitats and often finding my subjects in what might be considered less than ideal settings, surrounded by garbage and graffiti — a constant reminder that urban areas are still inhabited by an array of animals attempting to eke out a life. This has grown into a passion, as I now intentionally seek out habitats in and around cities where I can capture different species in interesting and underrepresented ways.
I challenge myself to encounter all wildlife on my own in the most authentic and noninvasive way possible, taking pride in approaching animals with humility — enjoying the submissive attitude and patience required for interacting with nature.
Although I have had the privilege of shooting in some of the most beautiful places on Earth, I retain the mindset that anything can be made beautiful if you seek to see it as such — and I encourage everyone to look for the interesting frame wherever you may find yourself.
